high-strength bainitic steels
Authors
abstract
with careful design, mixed microstructures consisting of fine plates of upper bainitic ferrite separated by thinfilms of stable retained austenite have exhibited impressive combinations of strength and toughness in highsiliconbainitic steels. the silicon suppresses the precipitation of brittle cementite leading to an improvement intoughness. the essential principles governing the optimisation of such microstructures are well established, particularly that large regions of unstable high-carbon retained austenite must be avoided. the aim of the presentwork was to see how far these concepts can be extended to achieve the highest ever combination of strength andtoughness in bulk-samples, consistent with certain hardenability and processing requirements.

full textStrong Bainitic Steels by Continuous Cooling Transformation
Using metallurgical models, three steels were designed to obtain carbide-free bainitic structures in the as-rolled condition. Experimental castings were hot-rolled in a pilot mill and their austenite decomposition kinetics were measured using dilatometry. Tensile and Charpy impact properties were measured and the microstructures were characterised using X-ray diffractometry, optical and scannin...
full textNEW BAINITIC STEELS BY DESIGN Displacive Phase Transformations
Bainitic steels are now at the forefront of new and exciting developments in steel technology. This paper discusses how phase transformation theory is being exploited in the systematic design of every aspect of the new alloys, emphasising the immense influence that Professor Wayman has had on the development of the subject [1]. Technology of Bainitic Steels Gone are the days when industry could...
full textNiobium Alloyed High Strength Steels for Automotive Applications
Modern vehicle bodies make intensive use of high strength steel grades to meet the contradicting demand of lighter weight and simultaneously better mechanical performance. For many steel grades microalloying by niobium is the key to achieve their characteristic property profile. In HSLA steels niobium enhances the strength primarily by grain refinement. In interstitial free high strength steels...
full textA Model for the Microstructure of Some Advanced Bainitic Steels
Some applications of phase transformation theory towards the exploitation of bainitic microstructures are discussed , with particular emphasis on the quantitative aspects of alloying element effects. Examples are used to illustrate the principles involved in the design of advanced bainitic alloys of the type currently under investigation in the steel industry.
